Vall d’Hebron Solidarity running race

More than 500 people kick off the 30th-anniversary celebrations of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute by participating in the 1st Vall d’Hebron race.

The course, which could be completed either running or walking, passed through streets near the Vall d’Hebron Campus. With this race, the 30th-anniversary commemoration of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) has officially begun.

“This race, which we are celebrating for the first time and is dedicated to research, reflects the values that VHIR wants to convey to society: the spirit of effort, solidarity, and commitment to the community,” said Dr. Begoña Benito, director of VHIR.

At exactly 9:00 AM, the race started for those who chose to run, covering a distance of 5 km, which meant two laps around the circuit. At 9:05 AM, the participants who opted to walk began their route, completing one lap of 2.5 km.

The first-place finisher in the men’s category for the running race was Ferran Gimeno, with a time of 17 minutes and 34 seconds. In the women’s category, the winner was Cristina Solé, with a time of 18 minutes and 16 seconds.

Among those who participated by walking, the men’s category winner was Oriol García, with a time of 19 minutes, while in the women’s category, Yolanda Domingo was the first to cross the finish line, with a time of 19 minutes and 36 seconds.

The race was the first of several events organized to celebrate VHIR’s 30th anniversary, successfully achieving its goal of bringing together Vall d’Hebron professionals and neighborhood residents to support research.

The idea of hosting an official Vall d’Hebron race had been in the works for some time, and we finally made it a reality thanks to the collaboration of our professionals and the support of the Horta-Guinardó District Management and the Barcelona Sports Institute. With this edition, we are launching a race that we hope will continue in the future. In fact, in 2025, the race will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital.
