The agrarian organization Unió de Pagesos will organize in the Barris Nord pavilion in Lleida a great tasting of sweet fruit for 5,000 boys and girls of primary education, between 5 and 12 years old, from schools in the Segrià region on September 26.
The tasting is part of the ‘Enjoy it’ campaign, which has the support of the entire sweet fruit sector in Lleida to promote the large producing area.
The ‘Enjoy it’ campaign, which began in 2005 and in which more than 20,000 schoolchildren from all over Catalonia have participated since then, aims to promote the consumption of sweet fruit among children with a very practical methodology, tastings that teach how to eat fruit, in addition healthy, it’s fun.
The activity consists of carrying out a fruit tasting for the children, accompanied by an entertainment group that has previously explained the qualities and benefits of fruit in their diet.
Each participant takes the ‘Enjoy-la’ lunch box —in the shape of an apple— full of seasonal fruit with the aim that it be later reused by the children to bring fruit to school and in this way give continuity to the performance involving the families.
According to Unió de Pagesos several recent studies confirm that the consumption of fruit is on the decline, and, currently, only 37.8% of the population consumes it daily.
The average consumed is less than three pieces a day —the minimum recommended amount— according to the results of the first Spanish National Diet Intake Survey carried out by the Spanish Food Safety Agency.
The campaign, sponsored by the Lleida City Council, the Provincial Council, the Segrià Regional Council, the Catalan Council for Integrated Production, Afrucat, Plusfresc, Grupo Català and the Lleida Central Wholesale Market, won the Strategy award last year Naos 2010 from the Ministry of Health in the category of promoting healthy eating in schools.
The president of the Provincial Council, Joan Reñé, has asked Unió de Pagesos to go one step further and transfer its initiative to the rest of Catalonia to promote the fruit of the Lleida regions so that the agricultural sector can benefit, which at many times suffers factors such as the climatology or circumstances of globalization.
Reñé has indicated that the corporation collaborates with a contribution of 30,000 euros, and has indicated that it is a very good campaign to promote this product, “since if the children understand the qualities and benefits of eating fruit, when they get home They will also pass it on to their parents. “
